The Improvisers’ Workshop is a Guildhall School group focusing on creative jazz improvisation, approaching the jazz ensemble as a malleable vehicle for contemporary composition. This performance will feature tap dancer Annette Walker. Walker’s invitation to feature in this concert is inspired by Geri Allen’s composition ‘The Dancer’, and a live performance with Allen’s trio and tap dancer Maurice Chestnut in 2009 (Geri Allen & Timeline Live).
Annette Walker presents a follow up to her initial March 2021 presentation about a forgotten choreographer of British musical stage and screen, Buddy Bradley.

Article: In 2020, Buddy Bradley’s name appeared several times during my research on tap dance history in the UK and I was intrigued about how this American became the first Black choreographer of British musical film in the 1930s. How is it that hardly any dancers (including myself) had heard of him? The more I learned about Buddy, the more widespread I found his influence to be and by summer 2021, I was writing a research project proposal in order to recover the missing story of his contribution to British dance practice

Annette’s new solo tap show debuts at the Albany on 6 July 2023! Free-flowing storytelling about Will Gaines with improvised tap dancing by Annette accompanied by Alex Ho on piano, followed by a tap jam with live music by The Rhythmaticians.
Annette presents a talk about the history of tap dance with footage. This is the final day of a programme of Tap Dance Day events curated by Petra Haller from 19 to 25 June.
